STEEPLE SOUNDS

March 2026

We are a Christian community of people who are reaching out to our neighbors,
at home and abroad, sharing our faith and our resources.

Central Square Congregational Church, UCC, of Bridgewater, Massachusetts is an open and affirming
church. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

From the Desk of Rev. Beth

Rev. Elizabeth Stotts, Pastor

A member of the church asked to speak with me this week about their Lenten practices. They were worried about feeling discouraged if they weren’t able to maintain their practices. I want to be clear; Lent invites us into the desert with Jesus—not to prove ourselves flawless, but to become more faithful.

So often we approach this season with a lot of pressure: pray more, give more, fast better. We set ambitious goals and, when we stumble, feel like we’ve failed. But Lent is not a spiritual performance review. It is a pilgrimage. And pilgrimages are about direction, not speed.

When the Bible tells of Jesus spending forty days in the wilderness, it does not describe perfection achieved through willpower. It reveals trust deepened through surrender. The desert strips away illusions. It shows us our hunger—physical, emotional, spiritual—and invites us to bring that hunger honestly before God.

Progress in Lent looks like small, steady steps:
• Choosing prayer even when distracted.
• Beginning again after missing a day.
• Softening a hardened attitude.
• Offering forgiveness, even imperfectly.

Perfection says, “If I can’t do it flawlessly, why try?”

Grace says, “Begin again.”

Lent is not about becoming impressive, it is about becoming open. Not about conquering weakness, but about recognizing our need for mercy. Each time we return—after failure, fatigue, or forgetfulness—we practice resurrection in miniature.

This season, let your goal be movement toward love, not mastery. Let your fasting create space, not shame. Let your prayer be honest, not polished.

Because God does not wait at the finish line with a grade sheet. God walks beside us in the wilderness, shaping progress in every imperfect step.

Blessings,
Rev. Beth

“Here I am Lord”

Isaiah 6:8
New International Version

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”  And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

This scripture will be the focus of our Stewardship Sunday on March 15. We will focus on being a Christian, being vulnerable and being generous.

Having our Stewardship campaign during Lent is purposeful and with intention. It is deliberate and conscientious. Lent is a time for spiritual growth and a time to reflect on your faith journey and a time to recognize your gifts and how to best use them to serve the Lord.

The Congregational Engagement Team serves as a cohesive element, finding ways to bind us together in Christ’s love, presenting a stewardship campaign, invoking intentional giving and providing avenues of spiritual growth.

Thank you,
Carol and Natalie

Send your brief, one-line message to the church office at office@csccucc.com. If it's received by the 20th of the month, it'll be in the next Steeple Sounds. If it comes after, we'll save it for the next one.

Central Closet Thrift Shop means so much to so many. We are open most every Wednesday and Saturday, from 10-2. Regular shoppers, occasional shoppers and first timers all enjoy our shop. Some come to purchase, others to donate, others to look, and some just come to visit. All are welcome.

To those who haven't been in yet, we have something for everyone. Clothing for men, women, and children, accessories, books, jewelry, toys, and our popular 25 cent table. So when in doubt shop us first and you might be pleasantly surprised with what you find.

And check us out for those little extras you need for Easter! Extra glassware or serving plates? Decorations? Small toys or gifts? You never know what you’ll find at the shop!

Thanks to all that help us support the church.

One Great Hour of Sharing
For seventy-five years the theme of the One Great Hour of Sharing has been love. The One Great Hour of Sharing (O.G.H.S.) offering is an opportunity to give beyond our own church. When you give to O.G.H.S you are supporting ministries around the world such as health, education, and agricultural development, emergency relief, refugee ministries, and both international and domestic disaster response. Your giving ensures God’s love is present and lives are changed. Share your love offering to the world.

The O.G.H.S. offering will be on Sunday, March 15.

Spring is a beautiful time to nurture your relationships, just as nature nurtures the first buds of the season. Like a garden, caring for one another requires patience, presence, and the right conditions to flourish.

Here are a few ways to show care and celebrate connection this spring:

Plant Hope Together: Caring for others is often about securing the good of someone else, which in turn brings joy to yourself. Whether you are literally planting seeds or figuratively sowing kindness, remember that to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.

Offer "Spring Rain" Support: Just as spring showers provide the nutrients needed for flowers to bloom, your compassion can help a loved one through a difficult transition. Sometimes, the most caring act is to simply sit quietly beside someone while they find their way.

Practice Heartfelt "Spring Cleaning": Use this season to sweep out old grudges and freshen up your point of view. Forgiving imperfections in others is a powerful way to reignite the warmth in your relationships.

Share the Sunshine: Small gestures make a difference. Offer a genuine compliment, take a short walk together to look at the first blooms, or send a simple note saying, "You make my heart bloom."

As the world awakens, remember that where flowers bloom, so does hope. By choosing to stay present and patient with one another, you allow your bonds to grow deep and strong.

Last month we finished up our chapter on Heifer International! We raised a total of $1,421.69!! The kids did such an amazing job with all of the crafts and Krissy did an amazing job leading the kids. This month we are moving into Lent. We are using the Illustrated Ministries curriculum. Unlike previous years where Kids Church has presented something to the congregation on Palm Sunday, we are going to skip that lesson and go immediately to Easter Sunday and talk about Jesus' resurrection. Because Easter is always an intergenerational service, one of the holes Rev. Beth and I noticed in our curriculum is that we're always teaching right up to Palm Sunday, and skip right over Easter in Kids Church. This is like teaching the story of Jesus' birth, and then skipping right over the birth of Jesus. It should be a great change. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the kids this Lenten season!
